SPECTRUMS

2020 - 2021.

Spectrums series.

Materials: all works are printed using pigment inks on Ilford fibre gloss paper 320 gsm. Collection of the artist.

Spectrums is a study of colour as a fundamental part of the human condition. Deep, saturated colour can evoke memories and emotions. In the study of human perception, colour has been shown to linger in our memory.

How we have remembered colour throughout our lives will influence how we perceive colour today and in this way, we all see colour a little differently. The exhibition is an invitation for us to recall the past and question the role that colour has played in the formation of our memories. There is an interplay of time, colour and light when photographing the spectrum, as a fleeting moment is captured through colour. Each image captures the optical manipulation of light through refractive glass prisms. The series demonstrates the rich, variable quality of natural light and how subjective people’s perception or experience of colour can be.

This exhibition was developed to coincide with the tenth year anniversary of the Māngere Art Centre Ngā Tohu o Uenuku and is on show from October 30th through to December 11th 2020.

The spectrum photographic typology studies are an ongoing series created in collaboration with Shahriar Asdollah-Zadeh, architectural designers Sarosh Mulla and Patrick Loo. All photographs within the series are of the collection of the artist collaborators.
